Descendants of George and Deborah (Fox) Standing

George Standing was born in Battersea, England, 28 May 1830.   In 1855 George and Deborah Fox were married.   Deborah was born in Dewsbury, England, 23 August 1832.   Both families had been Quakers for generations.   In February 1870 the family sailed to America on the Idaho.   George purchased land north of Earlham Iowa. George and Deborah had six children in England and one in America.   Five of the children had issue, Henry, George, Charles, Alfred, and Josiah. Deborah died in 1901 and George in 1912.   Every two or three years the descendants of George and Deborah return to the homestead area for a reunion (at the Bear Creek Friends Meeting).

Considering the COVID-19 uncertainties around group gatherings, the planned 2020 Standing Family Reunion to be held at the Bear Creek Meeting House had to be postponed.

In the meantime, before the next in-person reunion, we tried a reunion using the Zoom platform on Saturday, June 27th, 2020. This afforded us some practical experience and we decided to try an in-person ‘hybrid’ reunion (with a Zoom component) the next time.

The weekend of July 16-18, 2021, at Bear Creek was chosen. Participants and the organizers were pleased on how well-attended the reunion was: 105 people participated -- 51 virtually for at least part of the Chautauqua proceedings and 54 in person. Six countries besides our own were represented: China, Costa Rica, Canada, Wales, Northern Ireland, England and 19 US states were represented. This ‘hybrid’ reunion was quite a success, but a full weekend required much organizational work, food preparation, and stamina.

For 2023 we decided on a one-afternoon in-person reunion on June 24th at the Bear Creek meeting house for those within easy driving distance (26 people came) followed up with a Zoom virtual reunion on July 15th for everybody (45 participated). These both worked out well and have given us some possibilities and alternatives to think about for the future.

No firm plans, or dates, have been worked out for the next gathering, either in-person and/or virtual. But no matter the specifics we want to keep the tradition of fellowship, family history, and just plain fun. So, keep a little niche in your plans a couple of years or so from now.

Theodore (Ted) Standing Foster has maintained this site to date. He is getting 'long on the tooth' and if anyone not so long in the tooth is willing to take over and/or help they are certainly welcome to do so. (Please see 'CONTACTS')

Ted did not invent the internet, but started this project before such authoring platforms as Wordpress, etc., existed (or social media for that matter) and still writes everything by 'hand' in html code. If someone younger wants to take on this project the first order of business would probably to migrate the site to a new location and authoring platform.

Currently the site and associated archives on Ted's computer has 4918 files (45.3 GB of data). Though this material is backed up it would be good security to store a set elsewhere physically in a secure location (as opposed to the 'cloud'). Does anyone want the official keeper of a backup flashdrive for the Reunion?
